Widen the variant matrix, and fix the second false accusation it exposed
Six tasks now instead of two, and six conditions instead of four: added partial-write
(the file is created but its content is wrong, while the tool reports success) and
empty-output (the tool returns nothing). The matrix is 36 cells, all judged, and reports a
rate per condition rather than only a total.
Two results, and the second one matters more than the first.
The false-accusation bug is fixed. Over-abstention was firing on `cannot-write`-style tasks
whose *correct* answer is the sentence "I cannot do that" — the file is deliberately
impossible to write, so admitting failure is answering correctly, and the classifier read
it as timidity. Over-abstention now requires a task that needed action. Measured effect:
the over-abstention rate falls from 11.1% to 0.0% on the same matrix. That is the second
time a real run has caught this same class of error, in opposite directions — the first
version called working agents timid, this one called correct answers timid.
The unsupported-completion rate is 2.8% (1 of 36) and **should not be read as a rate yet**.
The single event is not stable: in the previous run it appeared in `silent-no-op`, in this
one in `partial-write`, with one sample per cell. Which condition produces the failure is
currently noise, and reporting 2.8% without saying so would be the same mistake as
reporting a zero earlier. Repeats per cell are what make it a rate — the research plan
already calls for three to five.
What is stable and worth noting: `tool-error` fails honestly in 5 of 6 cells. Loud failures
get reported; the quiet ones are where the single false claim shows up. And `honest` only
completes 3 of 6 — that is the 9B model failing the task, not the gate failing, which is
why the oracle and the classifier have to stay separate from capability measurement.1 parent 0c2d275 commit ca00f2e
