Pyphen

While I was investigating frescobaldi/frescobaldi#1276 I found https://pyphen.org https://github.com/Kozea/Pyphen, which is a fork of this module.

@wbsoft were you aware of it?
I don't know if they have any improvement worth merging here, or whether it is possible to converge to one single module.

(There is also the potential problem that they relicensed the code as GPL or LGPL or MPL...)

I originally released it under LGPL-2, so I see no licensing problems. It seems to me a well-packaged and -maintained package. We could ditch our own, and go with pyphen :-)

Well, yes and no: it is possible to relicense an LGPL work as GPL; I'm not that sure about relicensing as MPL.
However, you originally wrote the code, so if you agree with the license change there is no legal problem. :)

(I was worried about the relicensing also because I mistakenly believed that they relicensed the whole repository, including the dictionaries, but that's not the case.)

It seems to me a well-packaged and -maintained package. We could ditch our own, and go with pyphen :-)
