There appears to be a way to get to the thumbnail image of a DO by using the second dc:identifier in the original record which is a URL, and replacing "cdm/ref" with "utils/getthumnail". For example: http://173.196.26.156/cdm/ref/collection/movie/id/17 in record number: 26097--oai:173.196.26.156:movie/17. The disadvantage of this approach is that it's not possible to get from there to the thumbnail image with its (abbreviated) metadata.
The other option that will get you to the thumbnail image plus the abbreviated metadata can be seen by using the following base URL: http://www.lapl.org/collections-resources/visual-collections/
with the addition of the words of the dc:title hyphenated together without using articles, e.g., http://www.lapl.org/collections-resources/visual-collections/stormy-weather. or "face-sky" for the title "Face in the Sky". This information would have to be derived as it is not in the metadata per se. There are only 29 images in this collection, so could be added manually quite easily, but we'd need to ask LAPL to insert this information in the future.
