Can you please log this as a future feature request for consideration in the Registration system?
The feature request is for variable pricing or multiple price points within a single event. I believe this feature is available in other registration systems on the market (or so I've heard).
I've received this feedback from Reg users multiple times in the past few years. As you can see below, there are several workarounds people use with varying degrees of success, but they are not ideal in the sense that they put the burden on the customer to use a separate event link or remember/use a coupon code, or put the burden on the department to send separate invoices in Payments.
This is not high priority, and is not a work stoppage.

If it is just a matter of changing the price, then we could probably do this. We would need to change how the paid flag works.
Maybe add a new database field to indicate if it has been paid instead of a calculation.
Or, perhaps better, add a field to indicate the amount that they should be charged (Happens when they pay, not when they register?)
