Having noticed a handful of CPU issues in the last year -- most unresolved -- I decided to go through our list of issues (closed and open) from the initial launch of Desktop TNG. I compiled a list of the ones that are mainly affecting CPU and performance across multiple users using both OSX and Windows.

Having noticed a handful of CPU issues in the last year -- most unresolved -- I decided to go through our list of issues (closed and open) from the initial launch of Desktop TNG. I compiled a list of the ones that are mainly affecting CPU and performance across multiple users using both OSX and Windows.

We already have one hubber opened issue addressing performance in general so this may be a good place to start.

Here is the output of what I found:

• Increasing RAM usage RAM usage increases over time desktop/desktop#3149
• CPU drain from multiple processes running Even minimized and with no data loaded CPU is constantly being used on windows desktop/desktop#1641, Github Desktop always running in the background desktop/desktop#2002, "Downloading update" never get finished desktop/desktop#4005, High CPU utilization in background -- macOS desktop/desktop#7610, CPU usage spikes due to refreshing sidebar indicators in background desktop/desktop#7955, git.exe using resources even when desktop client is idle desktop/desktop#9675, Mutiple git.exe running and getting 100% in CPU desktop/desktop#9969, Internal git process periodically using ~100% CPU usage on macOS desktop/desktop#10171
• High commits / many repos / mass discard causing CPU spike Lots of commits to be pushed = high fans desktop/desktop#3519, Slow performance, excessive CPU usage desktop/desktop#5226, UI is incredibly slow while (indexing operation?) runs in background shortly after opening desktop/desktop#5435, Discarding changes takes huge amounts of time desktop/desktop#7155

• Helper in Mac causing CPU spike GitHub Desktop for Mac keeps asking me for root access to install "helper" desktop/desktop#3616, hangs often desktop/desktop#4290, Update failing desktop/desktop#10575

Hopefully, this gets the ball rolling on what could be the root cause of these issues affecting many of our users.
