Disabling Telnet echo in chat example

I'm trying to disable echoing of user input inside telnet with the chat server example but haven't found anything that works so far.

Things I've tried:

• Sending byte sequences using lines.send()
• Changing telnet client options

I think it's because the client always connects in the obsolete line mode. Attempting to set TELNET LINEMODE causes an error on the server when it tries to decode the input.
