quire new command should accept package tarballs from command line #1196

Before proceeding, check to make sure there isn’t an existing issue for this idea or a similar one.

  • I have searched the existing issues and determined this is a new proposal.

Proposed change

Now that quire new directly uses the quire-11ty package tarball to do some of its work it would be useful to expose this to CLI users as a mechanism for bootstrapping new issues of journals, new publications of house-styled quire publications, testing unattended publication upgrades, etc.

This issue is to update quire new with an --quire-package flag that accepts an npm tarball directly and lightly update the help messaging of the command to reflect the new option.

Potential Impact

This would help developers who are working and testing within code Quire, and also give general users another way of creating and managing their projects, especially for regular users who may have a particular/customized version of the quire-11ty package that they use regularly.

Supporting Information

This suggestion was originally posted to Jiira by @cbutcosk on 21/Jul/25 as DEV-21461 and is now migrated here.
