M. Bert Storey Engineering And Innovation Center, room# 2212 & 1211
Although the University does not explicitly specify compensated time off for graduate students, I give all graduate students, research assistants, and postdocs the right to take time off work for whatever reason (health, family, whatever), but I expect to know when you would like to take time off, and the period, so I do not bug you during that time :)
Ph.D. is not easy, and I do want to see you all become the most successful students who get whatever opportunity you wish for and all your dreams come true, and you know me, I do not compromise on quality, so you also should care about your very own interests, for me, it is very frustrating when I see you do not care for your career and your success. So if this is the case, you should know that it is not compatible with my style; other advisors might be okay with it, but I am not; I want all students to graduate with me to become the most successful people in your field.
I recommend you create your web page and tell me the link. I recommend using GitHub pages. You can see mine as an example, but there are many other templates out there you can use.
It is worth tracking certain events for your web page or CV. This does not have to be public, but you will need it at some point anyway. It's easier to collect this information while it is happening instead of reconstructing it later. This may include:
- Any accepted or published papers, preferably with full information such as DOI, pages, publisher, acceptance rate, etc
- Any reviewing you performed (invited by somebody or as a PC member)
- Any talks you have given, especially invited talks
- Teaching: TAing, guest lectures, etc
- Awards
Having a blog, Twitter account, or similar visible on your web page does not hurt.
I recommend hosting projects on GitHub, actually, it is not a recommendation, it is mandatory! You can create private repositories on the lab GitHub. In addition to the function as a collaboration tool, this serves as a log and backup. Please learn to use Git fluently (branches, forking, merging, stashing, etc.).
I recommend using GitHub features like issue tracking and wikis where appropriate.
If you need any equipment (laptop, device, monitor, keyboard, etc.) for your research, please do not hesitate to ask for it!
