Reasons to drop Stencil

As someone preparing to dive into the world of web components and evaluating a number of tools (Stencil specifically), I'm curious to hear some elaboration on the rationale behind the decision to drop Stencil.

What bugs and limitations were encountered? And more generally, what would you say to someone considering using Stencil as the foundation of a new design system?

In addition would be also interested in understanding why a home grown solution showmaker instead of Lit-element ?

Great writeup! It's a helpful example of sound reasoning about the pros/cons of building a full system of components on top of outside tooling.
