## { .custom-title }

::: {.notes}
What is normal
- UNIDIRECTIONAL: We minimize how much we control the audience. Raise your hands...
- Narrative: Conflicto, Sorpresa, Preciso (don't be the boring kind)
- Pit of snakes & drawing/practice comic. "you are born with this talents..."
- Jitters, doubts, nervousness. Afraid: sign of a healthy brain.
- Empathy: audience roots for you!
- Emergences: your reaction will be mirrored by the audience. If you keep your cool, people will too.
- Public speaking is different from speaking, just as karaoking is different from sining on the shower.
- PSp: Willingness to stand out.
- It's never as bad as you , and never as good as you dream. But it's unpredictable.
- Effective Storytelling >> Easier to remember (speaker and audience), more engaging, more fun, it's deliveratedly created. It's an act!
- Congrats! Huge step towards improving.
- Skill to be improved.
-
- Presentation is communication
- Humans: biological computers
TO DO:
- Expand content on regular public speaking notes (common advice)
Storytelling tips/tricks help a long way. Life is boring without emotions.
When no emotion is given, BOREDOM is the emotion.
REGULAR TIPS:
- It's never about you. You are never the protagonist on other peoples' life.
- Always have a structure to guide you - allow for surprises, but don't break the structure. As simple as Jobs 3 examples.

## Public speaking
### is very different from regular speaking
::: {.incremental}
- Unidirectional
- One versus all
- Hierarchical
- Time debt
:::
---
## Is it worth it?
- Share your work/knowledge
- Network with peers
- Learn new things
- Stand out
:::{.fragment}
and the most important to me, to **defeat procastination**!

#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-note title="Secret #0" .fragment}
Having fears/doubts is sign of a healthy brain
:::
---
{fig-align="center" width="40%"}
[{fig-align="center" width="40%"}]{.fragment}
---
You never stop having fears, but you learn to control/ignore them.
Same as you do with riding a rollercoaster.
---
#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-tip title="Secret #1" .fragment}
People's reactions are easy to predict.
:::
---
#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-caution title="Secret #2" .fragment}
In case of emergency, your reaction will be mirrored by the audience.

*I hope you laught with this joke.
If not, I'll just continue with the rest of the talk pretending nothing happened.*

Exercise:
- If your name starts with a vowel, raise your left hand.
- If your name ends in a vowel, raise your right hand.

#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-warning title="Secret #3" .fragment}
As a speaker you **command** the room!
Make use of this new power!
:::

#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-important title="Secret #4" .fragment}
Most people have empathy and want you to succeed.

#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-note title="Secret #5" .fragment}
Humor is great tool to sync a room.
:::
::: {.callout-tip title="Secret #5 B" .fragment}
Humor works better when is not expected.
:::

#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-warning title="Secret #6" .fragment}
We are only as good as our communication skills.
:::
---
You are perceived as the multiplication of "how good you are" by "how good you communicate".
Communication skills end up being the "great filter" for engineers, scientists, and programmers.
---
#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-important title="Secret #7" .fragment}
Formula to be memorable: simplicity meets excentricity.
Use as little colors and text as possible, but make it unique.

What's more memorable: left or right?

## Side note: Own your weird
Book Rec #1: **Own your weird**, by Jason Zook.
Don't be like everybody else: leave a mark.
Use your preferred colors.
Put as many dinosaurs on the background as you want.

#### Some notes on public speaking
::: {.callout-caution title="Secret #8" .fragment}
Never have more slides than the number of minutes you have to speak.

Know yourself!
What happens to you before/during/after the talk?

**Quick Q&A**
What do you think?
Is there any advice you would like to share & add to the list?

## Presentation is communication

##### Presentation is communication: The message
Message should be tailored from [**a specific speaker**]{.fragment} [to **the specific audience**.]{.fragment}
[Data Storytelling helps selecting the best **content** and **format** to make the message clear and engaging.]{.fragment}

##### Presentation is communication: A human speaker
*Humans: old hardware running updated and very demanding software*
::: columns
::: {.column width="50%" .fragment}
Good news:
- Presenting is a skill that can be learned.
:::
::: {.column width="50%" .fragment}
Bad news:
- Being nervous while presenting: part of a healthy brain.

##### Presentation is communication: Human audience
*Humans: old hardware running updated and very demanding software*
::: columns
::: {.column width="50%" .fragment}
Good news (for the presenter):
- Audience wants you to succeed.
- Brains are easy to hack.
:::
::: {.column width="50%" .fragment}
Bad news (for the presenter):
- Audience is easily distracted.

##### Presentation is communication
There's more than just content: Non-verbal communication

How to sound smart in your TEDx Talk | Will Stephen | TEDxNewYork

##### Confession
Non-verbal communication is my weak point.
When I ask for feedback, I get the following:
- You should vary the pace
- You should vary the volume
I'm working on it!
---
#### Last one:
### Be honest and vulnerable
### but never undermine yourself or your work!
