Setup a static documentation generator and website

It would be great to have a basic static site setup to browse the documentation. Thinking about trying out Mkdocs or going the Sphinx / MyST route.

You've probably heard, but there was a lot of talk / support of migrating docs to MyST at the recent summit. perhaps docstub wants to be a test case? I think stefanv and fwkoch and agoose77 got close to getting API documentation working already.

I'm not opposed to trying it out. Though, was that support aimed at the myst-parser or at jupyter-book? E.g., scikit-image is already using the former.

The work at the summit was focused on converting docstrings in Python code to JSON, and rendering the JSON in an API webpage generated by Myst-MD's engine. That approach cuts Sphinx out of the process entirely (IIUC, myst-parser both defines the source format and also provides a sphinx plugin, and skimage's approach is utilizing that and still building with sphinx).
