I guess, first of all read the getting started section on the main page.

For this to be manageable for me, we need to do it in a proper way. So if you find a bug, go to the Issues tab, create a new bug report and fill out the template. Please do a quick search to see if it's been reported before. The more info you provide the faster I can fix it! I've tested only on my machines: MacOS Sequoia 15.5 and Windows 11.

For feature requests or any other question, use the Discussions tab.

Known Issues

• The max file length is around 80 seconds for performance reasons. Might make it longer eventually.
• I've disabled modulating modulators and some of the fancier noise shapes for now cos on Windows it was crashing.
• Synthesis quality isn't perfect. I'm working to improve it but the maths is hard. You'll find things like:
  • Shifting in time smears the transients a bit
  • Reversing time (scale -1x) isn't a perfect time reversal
• Synthesis is 2x slower on Windows until I upgrade the FFT library

Open Questions

• What factory presets should it have?
• Is the quick slots thing useful?
• What are the main pressure points in terms of UX? Too many parameters? Too much cognitive overhead?
• What other features/parameters/effects should it have? Read this
• Should brush size be saved in presets? It's a bit annoying have to change back the brush size when switching presets. But then sometimes you want a preset to have a certain brush size.
• Should I allow stacking of the whole brush panel on the left to allow for brushes that have multiple steps? This would allow for useful workflows like:
  • A time stretch with a snappy transient: a first step that applies a time stretch with a wide brush then another step with a thin brush that inserts the original transient
  • Reverse reverb: A first step that reverses the audio, then a second that applies effects then a final step that flips it back to normal
  • Chord brush: A brush with 5 steps that transposes the audio 5 times to form a chord, each with different panning

Great work Rob. Love the software-as-homemade-hack feel, refreshing when every other UI out there is 99% bullshit.

Also, just a note on macOS, if anyone downloads the binary from GitHub you may find it still refuses to open. That's because the download is quarantined due to the lack of signing (this is on top of the unsigned binary). Quick fix is to open terminal and type

xattr -rc [drag the Noise Canvas.app into Terminal]

Press return and it should clear any quarantine flags and make it possible to launch.

on windows 11 - standalone version...
1: ctr+z does not undo. half that wild, as your history thingy is aaaamazing! but yeah you know we love shortcuts.
2. your walkthru just leads me until page 5. on page 5 the "next" button is missing

and a question: what do you use else to multiply parts? other than the stack brush. and is it possible to have an other ink on the stack brush as the beginning of the sample? i wonder how to copy/stack parts from the middle/end of the audio file.

forget about the ctr+z / undo issue. somehow, the canvas thinks my keyboard is an english one and it works like an english one
