This may be of interest to users of GNOME and the Linux desktop:
Voluble is a GNOME shell extension that reads desktop notifications out loud with human-like voice using the pleasant voices of Piper, either directly or via speech dispatcher.
An obvious neural TTS engine choice due to its balance of quality and low resource utilization.

Not missing the to-do notifications from the nice note-taking app Joplin (among others) has always been of concern to me. Having them read out-loud even when away from the computer(and now even when Joplin is not running) is what this extension accomplishes (along with many other pleasant side effects). The extension can read selected text, features a mute setting and is aware of the system-wide "Do not Disturb" setting so that it does not speak "out of order".
