why do we need to run fstrim

HI Team,
I see that we run fstrim on every disk that we convert. Do we need to run it or is there an option to skip it?
Ideally as this takes a lot of time for the fstrim to run, we should have an option to skip it as we have already copied the blocks and the FS structure out.
