Zonemaster translation problems

We are currently upgrading Zonemaster to the latest versions, along with updating our customized web GUI.

We noticed an issue related to translations that doesn't occur in the older versions.

The exact same issue exists in this reference(?) installation.

The problem is that the translations are incomplete — some are missing. This seems to apply to all other languages as well, except for English.

This issue is not present in the service at https://zonemaster.se/fi/run-test. However, that service is using older versions.

Is there a known issue with translations in the latest version of Zonemaster? We're currently fixing the missing translations locally, but that's not an ideal solution.

Hi @samisalmensuo, sorry for the late response, I replied on the mailing list. I will copy it here too for future reference:

Translation in Zonemaster is currently a manual process, scattered across almost all components (Engine, CLI, Backend, GUI) and involves external, volunteering contributors (except for French and Swedish). Before each release we reach out to these contributors but it remains a “best-effort” process.
As of the latest release (v2024.2.1), translation on most components is pretty much up to date for all languages. However, GUI is an exception and is indeed quite behind for most languages since the addition of new text/FAQ in 2023, see the current opened PRs: https://github.com/zonemaster/zonemaster-gui/pulls?q=is%3Apr+is%3Aopen+label%3AA-Translation.

In your specific case (Finnish), you recently reviewed and approved zonemaster/zonemaster-gui#493 (thanks for that!) so it will be included in the next release.

So, in short, the translation system is still working. If you see more fixes needed, please add them in the PR. As per the translation guide (https://github.com/zonemaster/zonemaster-gui/blob/master/docs/TranslationGuide.md), “all elements with a element must have a element containing the translated message”.

Also, I forgot to mention in the email, but a tool like Poedit (https://poedit.net/) is of great help in this case as it abstracts all of the code.
