I dont understand how to activate a project

activation makes Serena aware of the project you want to work with. You can either choose to do this

    while in a conversation, by telling the model to activate a project, e.g.,

        “Activate the project /path/to/my_project” (for first-time activation with auto-creation)

        “Activate the project my_project”

    Note that this option requires the activate_project tool to be active, which it isn’t in the (default version) of context ide-assistant if a project is provided at startup. (The tool is deactivated because we assume that in the ide-assistant context the user will only work on the open project and have no need to switch it.)

    when the MCP server starts, by passing the project path or name as a command-line argument (e.g. when working on a fixed project in ide-assistant mode): --project <path|name>

what? what is the actual command to activate a project? and what do you mean "when in a conversation"? do you mean when i'm in a claude code conversation?

Yes, as the documentation states, you activate a project either by

• telling your LLM (e.g. Claude) to activate the project in the conversation (as a prompt) OR
• providing the project to be activated directly at MCP server startup (which is what our instructions for Claude Code tell you to do, because Claude Code is a project-based tool where this makes sense - unlike Claude Desktop, for example).

I installed it via the Claude /plugin marketplace. There are no installation instructions to ignore. I am pointing out the disconnect. I know how to properly configure it as I've read that documentation.

We can't unfortunately do anything about the wrong documentation and the wrong setup command in the Claude plugin marketplace. They ignored both our PR and an issue on that.

We have detailed installation instructions in our docs. The plugin installation offers no benefits and has various problems, the missing flag that you mentioned is just one of them (--context claude-code is also missing)

I didn't know they weren't letting you maintain it. Semgrep also has a problem there. Wow, that is nasty. Thanks for the information. I've had to modify several already.
