HPO term
Intrusion symptom HP:0032936

Suggested revision and reasons
Intrusion symptom HP:0032936 "Unintentional re-experiencing of a traumatic event involves symptoms that typically include sensory impressions and emotional responses stemming from the trauma. These symptoms seem to lack a sense of time perspective and context."
Based on its definition, would this term fit as a subclass (rather than a sibling) of Posttraumatic stress symptom HP:0033676?
Or are there instances of intrusion symptoms (or of any of its subclasses) occurring in non-PTSD conditions?

Thanks,

Paola

Hi Paola. Thanks for bringing this up. Posttraumatic stress symptoms (HP:0033676) is a little atypical for an HPO term because it's definition is based on a diagnosis rather than symptoms. We try to avoid creating terms like this but we can't easily delete them. Because Intrusion symptom (HP:0032936) is criteria B of PTSD, it is definitively a subclass (logical child) of Posttraumatic stress symptoms even though it could technically occur in the absence of PTSD. However, by the same logic we would have to add all the symptoms of PTSD as children. In most cases like this, we keep the atypical term (referencing a diagnosis) but don't incorporate it into the HPO hierarchical structure.

In this case, I think we should merge the two terms. This would be like removing the odd term, Posttraumatic stress symptoms (HP:0033676), without deleting the ID. This should work as I can't imagine someone using the term Posttraumatic stress symptoms in the absence of Intrusion symptoms.
