Suggestion for improved formatting

It would be nice if number arrays were all printed on the same line, to avoid stuff like this:

This is a matter of style and preference, and instead of changing the default behavior (and maybe breaking existing implementations, see #2526, I'd rather have a way to configure the serialization functions. Unfortunately, I haven't found a nice way to do so yet.
