From: header bypassed by Google?

Using Gmail as SMT, even if I put the email address johndoe@gmail.com in both the -f and the -o message-header options, the recipient still gets the SMTP username next to johndoe@gmail.com. eg
From: johndoe@gmail.com smtpusername@gmail.com

Any thoughts?
