I'm having the exact same issue as noted here. I see this was Closed but I cannot find a resolution listed anywhere. How was this fixed/worked around?

Going to close this, I found the solution here.
The chat history was freezing up VS Code, so the solution is to do ctrl + shift + p or just > in the search bar, and type in Chat: Clear Workspace Chats. Then, for safe measure, reload the window.

I would suggest maybe adding this as a troubleshooting FAQ!
