The contents of tools is somewhat historical - it would make sense to split into recommended and 'historical' packages.

My take on this:

Candidates for moving to tools-historical

  • enumerate: Extended version of the enumerate environment.

Use enumitem

  • rawfonts: Preload fonts under the old internal font names of LaTeX2.09. Not recommended for new packages, but may help when updating old files.

Not that useful these days

  • somedefs: Selective handling of package options. (Used in rawfonts.sty.)

Helper for rawfonts

  • theorem: Flexible definition of theorem-like environments.

Use amsthm

  • verbatim: Flexible version of verbatim environment.

Use fancyvrb

Probably keep even though not that useful (or used) I guess

  • fontsmpl: Package and test file for producing font samples.

(needs a fix though)

Doc changes needed if there are changes

  • tools-overview.tex
  • manifest
