C. 高等 Superlative particles

The superlative particles indicate the highest degree of a quality, state, or action.

These particles are:

`甚` `最` `頗` `極` `至` `迥` `殊` `綦` `切` `盡` `絕` `儘`

Examples of using the superlative particles:


① 好之甚也 The very best. [^the] good-~\'s-extreme (very_best) final_particle[:~].

② 甚相親 Closely related to. very[:^closely] 2mutually[:to_each_other] 1related.

③ 甚不相宜 Extremely unsuitable. ^extreme not[:un] 2mutually[:to_each_other] 1[~]suitable.

④ 其費甚大 These expenses are very large. this[:^these] spend[ings] [are] very large.

⑤ 凌辱已甚 Already very much disgraced. 2insult-disgrace (disgrace[d]) ^already very 1much.

⑥ 最優之禮 The most courteous treatment [^the] most excellent subordinating_particle[:~] ceremony[:courtesy].

⑦ 最西之處 The extreme west. [^the] 2most[:farthest] 3west ~\'s[:~] 1place.

⑧ 暹羅爲西南之最 Siam is in the most extreme south-west. sun_rising-gauze (Siam) be[:is] 2west-south (southwest) ~\'s[:~] 1[the] most[:extreme].

⑨ 頗久 For a long time. [^for a] very long_time.

⑩ 頗願 Very anxious. ^quite wish[:eager].

⑪ 頗覺不安 To be very much distressed. 2quite 1^feel[ing] not[:un] at_ease[:~easy].

⑫ 極爲明晰 Extremely clear. 2extreme[ly] 1^be[ing] bright-clear (clear).

⑬ 阻碍之極 A very great obstacle. 3obstruct-hinder (obstacle[s]) 2of 1[^the] extreme[:greatest].

⑭ 極以爲是 To consider as perfectly right. 2extreme[:perfectly] 1[^to] take-consider (consider) [as] right.

⑮ 極表同情 To completely sympathise with. 2extreme[:utmost] 1^express[ing] same-feeling (sympathy).

⑯ 樂極生悲 Too great joy will bring about sadness. 2[of] joy [will] 1[^the] extreme[-ity] bring_about sad[ness].

⑰ 其可謂至德也 This may be called perfect virtue. ^this can be_called consummate virtue final_particle[:~].

⑱ 爲天子父貴之至也 To be the father of the emperor is the greatest honor. [^to] be [the] heaven-son (emperor['s]) father [is] 3[of] honorable (honor[s]) 2of 1[the] consummate[:greatest] final_particle[:~].

⑲ 是爲至要 This is most important. ^this be[:is] consummate[:most] important.

⑳ 至關緊要 Of the highest importance. 2[the] consummate[:highest] 1concern[:^of] pressing-important (important[-ce]).

㉑ 迥不相同 By no means alike. 2vastly[:by_far] ^not 1mutually-same (alike).

㉒ 迥異前時 Very different from former days. ^vastly different_from before (former) time[s].

㉓ 殊不可解 It is quite inexplicable. at_all (^quite) not[:un] 2can[:~able] 1[~]solve[-].

㉔ 殊不然 Not at all so. 2very[:at_all] 1^not so.

㉕ 殊屬可憐 Truly lamentable. 2very 1belong[:^to_be_considered] can-pity (pitiful).

㉖ 軍律綦嚴 The military discipline is very strict. ^military rule[s] [are] extremely strict.

㉗ 人命關係綦重 The murder of a man is a question of the gravest importance. 2[of] human 3life (fatality) [are] 1concern-connect (^concern[s]) very important.

㉘ 切不可 Cannot on any account. `acute[:^absolutely] 2[~]not 1can.

㉙ 切勿 Do not by any means. `2acute[:by_any_means] 1^do_not.

㉚ 切要 Very important. ^acute[ly] important.

㉛ 切切 Very urgent. ^acute[ly] urgent.

㉜ 此等惡習尚未盡息 These kinds of evil practices have not yet entirely ceased. this[:^these] kind[s] [of] evil practice[s] [have] 2yet 1not complete[ly] cease[d].

㉝ 先補用 First (on the list) of the candidates. ^ahead[:^first] [of the] supplement-use (candidate[s]).

㉞ 儘東 On the extreme east. [^on the] extreme east.

㉟ 妙絕 Very good! ^wonderful [to the] utmost!

㊱ 絕色 Very beautiful. utmost[:^very] beauty[-iful].

㊲ 駭絕 Greatly surprised. ^startle[d] [to the] utmost.
