Introduction to Literary Chinese - Lesson 1, Text 2

人影 Man's Shadow person[:Man's] s[-S]hadow

新月初上。 The new moon had just risen. [The] new moon [had] just rise[n].

兒行廊下。似有一人隨其後。 A boy was passing under a veranda, (and) it seemed (to him) that somebody (lit. one man) was following him. [A] boy [was] go[:passing] 2[a] veranda 1under, [and it] seem[ed] [to him that] one-man (somebody) [was_]following 2him 1after.

不敢回顧。 The boy did not dare to look back. [The boy] [did_]not dare [to] 2back 1look.

急入告姊。 Hurriedly he entered (the house), (and) told (his) elder sister. ^hurry[-iedly] [he] enter[:went_inside] [and] tell[:told] [his] elder_sister.

姊曰。此{a:汝身之影}也。 (His) sister said, "It (is) the shadow of your body. [His] sister speak[:said], "^it 2your 3body 4~'s 5shadow 1is.

汝立燈前。行日下。{b:皆有影}。 (When) you are standing before a lamp, (or) going under the sun, there always is a shadow. [When] you [are_]stand[ing] 2[a] lamp 1before, [or] go[ing] 2[the] sun 1under, 2every[where] be[:there_is] 1[a] shadow.

何忘之耶。 How is it that you forget it?" ^how [is it that you] forget it interrogative_particle (~\?) [~\"]

Here 之 is a sign of the possessive case: "the shadow of your body".

Here 皆 is used as an equalizing particle which indicates that a quality, a state or an action relates to two or several objects to the same extent.

Here 乃 is used as a consequential particle.
