ref.json failing test question

Hello,

I have doubts about the test ref.json:

The "$ref": "#/$defs//$defs/" points to:

{
    "": { "type": "number" }
}

that has no "type" so may be any "type" including the string (no type is any type?).
Why the "non-number is invalid" here?
