Increase Resolution of Screen Recordings

Problem Statement

When recording with Quicktime, the saved .mov file has low resolution for me. A hacky workaround I found was recording in HDR which drastically increased the resolution, above what even BetterCapture currently records for me now at least. I tried with mp4 and mov with both H.265 and H.264 in BetterCapture but all record at the same relatively low resolution. I did not try the ProRes versions because I am looking for wide compatibility.

Proposed Solution

Add the ability to record at native resolution or near enough like 4K resolution, if possible.
This should work with mp4 and H.264.

Alternatives Considered

Recording in Quicktime in HDR mode, but converting that mov to mp4 affects the HDR and dims the video due to something called tone mapping. I also don't need the bright aspects of HDR, just the resolution quality increase that seems to be triggered by enabling HDR.

What resolution did you get vs. expect? I assume you are referring to the bitrate/quality and not the resolution itself, right?

In the options for recording in BetterCapture, I tried recording in different formats like mp4 and mov to see if one had higher quality but they recorded at the same quality.

I believe I am referring to the bitrate/quality instead of the resolution since I thought they were basically synonyms until you pointed out they aren't. The video file that was recorded by QuickTime in HDR seems noticeably sharper, although when comparing bit rate in quicktime it seems lower than the bitrate recorded by BetterCapture, which I find confusing. Hopefully, its less confusing for you.

Not sure about the exact settings of QuickTime but it's plausible. HDR uses 10-bit per color channel while SDR uses 8-bit. I will test HDR with HEVC in BetterCapture and compare it with QuickTime.

I found it easiest to compare the quality by recording text; this way, any blurriness or sharpness is more noticeable.
