Change HA presence entities to device tracker instead of binary sensor. #664

I notice that device presence is published as 'binary_sensor.DEVICENAME_is_present'. Is there a possibility to have an option to show devices as 'device_tracker.DEVICENAME'?

I have an automation to notify through my home speakers when a new device is found. Currently use hone assistant nmap integration but would like to switch to this so I can scan all my vlans.

This should be available in the next release. If you can, please have a look at the netalertx-dev docker image, in about 15 minutes (or after the last action finishes) from now.

Make sure you refresh your browser cache - and click the 🔄 refresh button in the top right corner.

It would be great if you could test this (backup everything first or use a new container) on your end by switching to the above image and letting me know if the issue was resolved.

hey Jokob, i just tested the latest image. i switched the presence sersor type to 'device_tracker' but i cannot seem to find any device_tracker entities for all of my netalertx devices.

'binary_sensor.DEVICENAME_is_present' does not appear anymore which is correct but the device_tracker doesnt appear anywhere.
example below.

digging into logs, i see all the devices experience this issue

i notice that here,

it doesnt correspond to the topic you list in the settings page

homeassistant/PRESENCE_SENSOR_TYPE/mac_44_ef_44_ef_44_ef/is_present/

and
2. the empty subtopic, leaving behind a double fwd slash.

is this expected?

I think this is a bug :/ can you try to add

PRESENCE_SENSOR_TYPE='device_tracker'

into your app.config? or try to download the latest netalertx-dev image 10 min from now and re-save the setting?

thanks for the quick test!

Can you try single quotes (it shouldn't matter, but worth a try):

PRESENCE_SENSOR_TYPE='binary_sensor'

if this doesn't work - can you try the latest dev image and re-save the settings thru the UI? (you might neet to clear the cache🔃)

i tried with single quote

PRESENCE_SENSOR_TYPE='binary_sensor'

as well as

PRESENCE_SENSOR_TYPE='device_tracker'

result is the same as previous. ill clone my container and try dev later.

idk why it sends multiples but it works regardless. in home-assistant it ends up looking like this

ideally it would read 'home' or 'away' like this,

but as is, it's already usable. looking forward to this coming to stable netalertx:latest 👍

i hope im not asking for too much, but would it be trivial to include attributes for the device_tracker entity? namely IP, mac address, hostname and vendor. It simplifies automation building having the information wrapped in one entity 🙏
