Not working on Ubuntu 24.04 with kernel 6.17

New kernel update 6.17.0-14-generic broke the MIPI camera. 6.14 did work, but went out of life/support by HWE (https://ubuntu.com/kernel/lifecycle). For now I fall back to the 6.14, but would be great if 6.17 does also support the camera soon.

I noticed the same problem yesterday. But when booting with the old kernel the camera doesn't work either. Now I am thinking about reinstalling, but how do you force Ubuntu to use the 6.14 kernel?

@ls2, well basically I still had a 6.14.0-37 kernel on my system after the hwe update. Hence you can select this one in grub and you are good to go. You can also install the linux-generic-6.14 package.
In regards how to select the kernel in grub, I cannot really assist you as I don't know your settings. By default grub is hidden and defaults to the latest kernel. You can change that by editing /etc/default/grub (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Setup or in German https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GRUB_2/Konfiguration/). My grub is configured to remember my last selection and restore it. Hope that helps!

@cconnert That's not the problem. I can boot the old 6.14 kernel from grub. But the camera is still not working. There must be another package with the 6.17 kernel installed that broke it for me. Originally, I got it to work with these instructions

And I think it was still the 6.8 kernel, and then it survived every update, except the last one. And I am not succeeding with the instructions from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntelMIPICamera, even when I boot only the 6.14 kernel from grub. So, I am suspecting that there is something else, and not only the kernel.

@ls2, i see. Well in my case 6.14 works with: libcamhal-ipu6epmtl (additional drivers) and linux-modules-ipu6-generic-6.14 packages

OK. I need libcamhal0, but the system now only sees intel-ipu6-dkms and libcamhal-ipu6ep which both don't work, i.e., even if I install the right version of libcamhal0, the system doesn't recognize it.

I had to reboot multiple times to kernel 6.14 in order to get the camera to work.

That has happened to me in the past. I don't know if that makes sense or if I'm hallucinating, but I'm under the impression that failing kernels can leave the camera in a weird state that is not cleared by rebooting.
In the past before kernel 6.14.0, the camera was working randomly on my XPS13. Most of the times, once it had failed it was not possible to get it working by rebooting, but on the next day it would work again. Which makes troubleshooting complicated.

So maybe @ls2 you need to reboot consistently on 6.14.0 and wait.

But my camera work well with this command lind sudo gst-launch-1.0 icamerasrc ! autovideosink and does'nt wokrk in MS Teams ( camera not recognized)

Same issue here it seems. Kernel upgraded to 6.17 on 24.04 and mipi camera now broken. Downgrading the kernel seems to now be broken too - could be related to removing 6.17.

Same command as above sudo gst-launch-1.0 icamerasrc ! autovideosink was used to check working before and failing after.

Just checked and sudo gst-launch-1.0 icamerasrc ! autovideosink works on my system with 6.17.0-14-generic. Nevertheless ffplay /dev/video0 does not work and fails with the following error:

/dev/video0: No such device

For me MS-Teams always worked when ffplay succeeded

@yoelii: I only used the intel-ipu6-dkms on 6.8. Starting with 6.14 I installed linux-modules-ipu6-generic-hwe-24.04 instead

Just revisited https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntelMIPICamera#Ubuntu_LTS_24.04 again and figured I'll try the latest oem (linux-oem-24.04d) one more time. Installed:

• linux-oem-24.04d
• linux-modules-ipu6-oem-24.04d
• linux-modules-iwlwifi-oem-24.04d
• linux-modules-usbio-oem-24.04d
• linux-modules-vision-oem-24.04d

and the camera works on 6.17.0-1010-oem incl. ffplay and web-browser.

Maybe it also depends on the model. I have a HP Dragonfly G4, and I was using the ppa from Dell. So, maybe it's the same camera as in the DELL XPS13. Anyone any experience with those?
