I have searched the existing feature requests to make sure this is not a duplicate request.
The feature
Hello there. I recently installed Immich on my NAS and have been exploring its many features and having an amazing experience.
There are tons of features that have been added and issues that seem to have been resolved, as many people have already commented, but crucially, one of the big things that made it difficult for me to move from my previous solution, Synology Photos, was the inability to properly display the time of day that videos were taken.
I agree that the app could display UTC-based time information, as the metadata recorded in the video file may only store UTC-based time, but in the end, the absolute time is the same, i.e. 0:00 UTC and 9:00 GMT +9:00 are the same time.
However, there is no reason to show a video shot at UTC 0:00 before a video shot at GMT + 9:00 01:00 in the timeline based view. The Immich app needs to convert this and put it in the appropriate place. Even if, when the Immich app checks the details of the video, it finds that the information is in UTC.
If we define a reference timezone in the .env file, we'd like to see the ability to display all photos and videos in that timezone. Especially for people who travel a lot for work, they often end up with a jumbled mix of photos from places in different time zones. If it's just a single trip, it might be possible to get around this by collecting photos and videos from that trip and using an app like EXIFTool to adjust the timezone across the board, but as the number of photos or videos grows and the timezones vary, it becomes difficult to fix them all.
Therefore, I think the right design direction for the app would be to display the metadata pointing to a file in UTC or GMT, convert it to the time zone you define in the “.env” (or UTC if you don't have one), and sort the timeline by that converted time.
