Current PDBDev entries such as 0001 have auxiliary files referenced by a DOI (eg. 10.5281/zenodo.1218053) in this case hosted by Zenodo. The speed downloading that data is abysmal. Currently trying to open PDBDev_00000001.cif in ChimeraX has taken 5 minutes to read just 36 of 62 Mbytes on a fast UCSF connection. This is unusable. 62 Mbytes would download in seconds from the RCSB. The files referenced by PDBDev entries using DOIs should have copies hosted by RCSB to provide consistent high performance network access and the .cif files should reference the copies of those data files at RCSB.
