The logo we have now is of JS coming out of a gopher hole. I like the play on words, but it isn't exactly evocative.
I think the best suggestion so far is the Gopher riding a JS wave. It is playful, fun to look at, and has two great meanings:
Go on top of JS = FUN
GopherJS lets you ride the wave from server to client.
This would also look great(!) as the cover to the book.
Icon
An icon needs to read well at small sizes, and the Gopher on a surfboard is not going to do that. I believe we should take a note from the Revel framework. They have a Gopher at a party (with a party hat.) When there is room for the full logo, they use the Gopher. When it needs to fit into a smaller space, they use the iconic party hat.
We could do the same with the surf board.
