Project Spend Limit on True forward/Soft cap plan #84158

Problem Statement

As a Sentry admin I would like to set “spend allocations” for projects while still only paying for what the projects use while on a True forward/soft cap plan. If a project goes above the limit defined their ingestion stops.

This feature is relevant for large organizations where teams and engineers are allowed to self-serve provision Sentry projects. Having this spend limit allows teams to experiment with Sentry without risking unplanned increases in spending or noisy neighbors (where one project eats all of the spans / errors) from another project.

As far as I can understand Spend Allocations currently cannot solve this problem as it isn't pay-for-what-you-use. (Contract quota is always paid, but it’s not possible to setup allocation on true forward unlimited quota)

Only admins should be able to increase spend allocations above the default org-setting.

Example:

  • 5 teams want to experiment with Sentry. Each team automatically gets a spend limit of 100 USD OR equivalent spans / month. On average the teams end up using 5 USD / month.
  • If one of the teams spike to 100 USD / month their ingestion stops and they will need to contact procurement / admins to have a higher limit.

Hi @goldfishy, thanks for writing in and sharing this use case with us. For now I'll leave this in the backlog, but will share this feedback with our product and business teams. We'll definitely take it into consideration as we plan for our upcoming work for this year.
