Catalysis of the reaction: 3-carboxy-2-hydroxy-4-methylpentanoate + NAD+ = 3-carboxy-4-methyl-2-oxopentanoate + NADH + H+.

does not match rhea activity
https://www.rhea-db.org/rhea/32271 which includes CO2
