Many web clients like Gmail are using Vi keybindings which are very popular within a significant group of software developers. I recommend adopting this best practice.

I'm not against this, but the amount of effort/work required to make it work is pretty significant. If someone wants to implement it, I'm all for it, but it's unlikely I'll have time to work on this myself.

I would very much like this too. I would like to work on this. But I have no clue where to start

Having an option to enable them in the options would definitely be a nice feature, but in lieu of that I recommend Vimium to those wanting VIM like controls. I think VIM like keybindings are more of a flavor than a best practice, but I do see a big benefit to keeping ones hands stationary on the keyboard, which is why I use Vimium daily.
