Implementation Verification Report: XSS Security Fix (Issue #292)

Date: June 1, 2026


Executive Summary

All acceptance criteria met and verified

This report confirms the successful implementation of production-safe rendering and API sanitization to eliminate XSS vulnerabilities in the Split Naira platform.


Acceptance Criteria Verification

✅ Criterion 1: Server-side length/charset validation on title, alias, projectType

Implementation:

  • File: backend/src/schemas/splits.ts
  • Lines: Added validators for safeTextField
  • Approach: Character whitelist + dangerous pattern detection

Validation Applied:

Title Field:
├─ Length: max 128 characters
├─ Characters: A-Z, a-z, 0-9, space, -, _, ., , ' & ( )
└─ Rejected: <, >, /, \, [, ], {, }, =, +, %, @, #, $, !, ^, ~, |, :, ;

ProjectType Field:
├─ Length: max 32 characters
└─ Characters: [same whitelist as title]

Alias Field (Collaborators):
├─ Length: max 100 characters
└─ Characters: [same whitelist as above]

Dangerous Patterns (all fields):
├─ HTML tags: <script, <img, <svg, etc.
├─ Event handlers: onclick, onerror, onload, on* attributes
├─ Protocol attacks: javascript:, vbscript:, data:text/html
├─ Functions: eval(, expression(
└─ Others: dangerouslySetInnerHTML references (verified ZERO)

Schemas Updated:

  • createSplitSchema - validates title, projectType
  • updateMetadataSchema - validates title, projectType
  • collaboratorSchema - validates alias
  • updateCollaboratorsSchema - validates collaborators with aliases

Testing:

  • ✅ Backend security tests verify rejection of all malicious inputs
  • ✅ Safe inputs (e.g., "My Music Project - 2024") are accepted
  • ✅ Character limits enforced at validation layer

✅ Criterion 2: Escape all user strings (no dangerouslySetInnerHTML)

Verification:

Implementation:

  • File: frontend/src/lib/security.ts
  • Function: sanitizeText(text: string): string
  • Approach: HTML entity escaping + pattern removal

  3. JavaScript protocol: javascript:alert(1)
  4. VBScript protocol: vbscript:msgBox(1)
  5. Data URIs: data:text/html,<script>alert(1)</script>
  6. SVG vectors: <svg onload=alert(1)>
  7. IMG tags: <img src=x onerror=alert(1)>
  8. Form injection: <form action="javascript:alert(1)">
  9. CSS expression: expression(alert(1))
  10. Iframe injection: <iframe src="javascript:alert(1)">
  11. Event attributes: onmouseover="alert(1)", onfocus="alert(1)"
  12. Base64 encoding: javascript:eval(atob(...))

Safe Input Tests:

  • ✅ Alphanumeric with spaces: "My Awesome Music Project"
  • ✅ Hyphens and underscores: "music-project_001"
  • ✅ Periods and commas: "Artist, Featuring Top..."
  • ✅ Ampersands: "Music & Art Productions"
  • ✅ Parentheses: "Project (Remix Edition)"

Character Limit Tests:

  • ✅ Title: max 128 characters enforced
  • ✅ ProjectType: max 32 characters enforced
  • ✅ Alias: max 100 characters enforced
  • ✅ Over-limit inputs correctly rejected

Frontend Tests: frontend/src/lib/security.test.ts

Test Coverage:

  • ✅ HTML special character escaping
  • ✅ Pattern-based sanitization
  • ✅ Safe text detection
  • ✅ Real-world XSS scenario handling
  • ✅ Text truncation with word boundaries
