How does Middleware work under the hood?

Hello everyone,
I hope everyone's 2022 is going well so far.

I'm a very curious person and I looked into the code of the Middleware and I wonder how it works under the hood.
Is it just an array of functions where next() is called to get the next function in the array or is next resolving a promise?
