Hello,

the project looks really promising. Sadly the demo is not working.

Thanks,
Roland

I just saw that the changes are all almost 1 year old. So is the project dead?

Hey Roland!

Thanks for the interest. I also had thought the progress was promising, but there was simply too much to do and the Elgg team needed to take a different approach that doesn't weigh us down with tons more code to maintain.

So we're focused on cleaning up the server side of Elgg and letting dedicated front end teams do their own thing.

Rewriting ui (or anything really) is hard on a short time budget!

Basically we want to make it easy to use whatever ui you like, but we won't provide one of our own for a while. Making everything work along with the level of pluggability that Elgg provides is tough.

E.g. the thing I got stuck on was the menu system. Plugins can hook in and change those on the server side. How are you supposed to emulate that client side? Then there's also the menu items that only make sense client side. How should we mix those in together?

It's just a lot of design work above writing a functional app that works for a single site...

I understand. But that makes a start with Elgg 2.0 a lot of work :/

I need to ship a basic version of a social network in one month. So then I probably need to go with 1.0 or another software.

2.0 has substantially more modest goals now. We are releasing in July with whatever is done by the time that date rolls around.
