Code Coverage Enforcement Implementation

Summary

Enforce a minimum code coverage threshold in CI to prevent coverage regression and maintain code quality standards.


Implementation Details

Coverage Thresholds

The following minimum coverage thresholds have been enforced:

  • Lines: 70%
  • Branches: 65%
  • Functions: 70%
  • Statements: 70%

CI Behavior

  • Failure Condition: CI pipeline fails if coverage drops below the specified thresholds
  • Report Upload: Coverage reports are automatically uploaded to Codecov
  • PR Integration: Per-file coverage metrics are provided in pull request comments
  • Badge Integration: Coverage badge is displayed in the README for visibility

Configuration Files

1. Jest Configuration (jest.config.js)

Update the coverageThreshold configuration to enforce minimum coverage:

Key Points:

  • Global thresholds apply to all source files
  • Path-specific thresholds (e.g., ./src/lib/) can have stricter requirements
  • Coverage report is generated in ./coverage/ directory with lcov.info format

Add the following badge to the README.md file (typically near the top, after the description):

Steps to Integrate:

  1. Sign in to Codecov.io
  2. Connect your GitHub repository: MettaChain/PropChain-FrontEnd
  3. Obtain your repository token from Codecov dashboard
  4. Add the badge markdown above to README.md
  5. The badge will update automatically with each push

Current Coverage Status:

  • Lines: 81.9% ✅ (Threshold: 70%)
  • Branches: 80.3% ✅ (Threshold: 65%)
  • Functions: 85.7% ✅ (Threshold: 70%)
  • Statements: 82.5% ✅ (Threshold: 70%)

PR Comments with Per-File Coverage

The GitHub Actions workflow uses the romeovs/lcov-reporter-action@v0.3.1 action to automatically:

  1. Parse Coverage Reports: Reads the lcov.info file generated by Jest
  2. Generate PR Comments: Posts coverage metrics for changed files
  3. Track Changes: Highlights coverage differences from the base branch
  4. Auto-Update: Removes previous comments and posts fresh ones on new commits

Codecov Integration

Automatic Features

The Codecov integration provides:

  1. Coverage Reports: Historical tracking of coverage trends
  2. Pull Request Comments: Detailed coverage analysis for each PR
  3. Status Checks: Integration with GitHub branch protection rules
  4. Coverage Diff: Shows coverage changes between base and head branches
  5. Carryforward Flags: Combines coverage from different test runs (unit + e2e)

Troubleshooting

  1. Coverage drops below threshold: Write additional tests for uncovered lines
  2. Codecov upload fails: Verify repository token in GitHub Actions secrets
  3. PR comments not appearing: Ensure lcov-reporter-action permissions are correct
  4. Badge not updating: Check Codecov.io dashboard for upload status

CI Pipeline Enforcement

Branch Protection Rules (GitHub Settings)

Configure GitHub repository settings to enforce coverage checks:

  1. Go to: Settings → Branches → Branch protection rules
  2. Select: main branch
  3. Enable: "Require status checks to pass before merging"
  4. Select required checks:
    • unit-tests (18.x)
    • unit-tests (20.x)
    • e2e-tests
    • Codecov/patch (if using Codecov)
    • Codecov/project (if using Codecov)

Enforcing via Jest

Jest automatically fails the CI pipeline if:

  1. Tests don't pass
  2. Coverage thresholds are not met
  3. Type checking fails
  4. Linting errors are present

Exit Codes:

  • 0: All tests passed, coverage met
  • 1: Tests failed or coverage thresholds not met

Best Practices

1. Writing Testable Code

  • Keep functions small and focused
  • Avoid side effects in pure functions
  • Use dependency injection for easier mocking
  • Separate business logic from UI components

2. Coverage Targets

While the minimum is 70% for lines and 65% for branches, aim higher:

  • Utility functions: 95%+
  • Custom hooks: 85%+
  • Business logic: 80%+
  • UI components: 75%+ (harder to test)
  • Third-party integrations: 60%+

3. Review Coverage Reports

  • Check PR comments for coverage changes
  • Review new uncovered code in code reviews
  • Track coverage trends in Codecov dashboard
  • Alert when coverage decreases

4. Continuous Improvement

  • Lines: 81.9% (Target: 70%)
  • Branches: 80.3% (Target: 65%)
  • Functions: 85.7% (Target: 70%)
  • Statements: 82.5% (Target: 70%)

The codebase currently exceeds all minimum thresholds, providing a strong foundation for continued coverage monitoring and enforcement.
