Allow multiple but disable multiple in one drag

I'd like to disable selecting and dragging multiple files at once. However, I'd like to allow multiple files one at a time. The use case here is a single image that can be replaced by the user. This allows me to not have to use the addRemoveLinks but allow the user to just drag a new file on top of the old one. This works fine if I allow for multiple files, but I don't want to allow for multiple files at one time.
Basically I want to "reset" the DropZone to allow for anther file upload but I want to keep the image preview so I cannot use removeAllFiles()

Something like a resetMaxFilesCounter.
It look like I need to reset this.getAcceptedFiles() and the only way to do that seems to be removing the files.

I'm trying to essentially remove the file but keep the visual thumbnail. I'm responding to on complete, so the status should never be uploading. If I emit removedFiles, the callback removes the preview element here.

Which is why I'm not emitting removedfile. I'm on 5.7
