Support public room creation without address; make room address optional.

Seemingly it’s not possible for users to create public rooms when alias_creation_rules are set. This also affects public rooms being created inside of public spaces. This is an enormous problem for us as an educational institution.

This problem can easily be solved by making the address field in the room creation dialog optional.

Telling each and every user how to change the join_rule of private rooms to public and adapt the room_history setting is unfortunately not feasible. There needs to be a better solution; making the room address optional could be exactly that.

In addition, or alternatively to the above:

Users need to have to possibilty to create rooms with join_rule: public (can be joined by others via link) besides creating rooms with visibility: public (can be found via room directory and joined by anyone; need an alias).

This could be fixed rather easily; it’s a massive problem for e.g. educational institutions and other communities which don’t want to have a completely open and randomly named and spammed room directory.

Please consider fixing this soon.

PS: Maybe those should be radio buttons instead of toggles, as you only should be able to choose one of the two options.

Public rooms can be found and joined by anyone.

Thanks all for clarifying. I would like to ask if anyone can point out a server where a user can create a public room where any guest with the link can join.
