Ah, that's true. I had a report of its confusing a customer who:

• knew that they'd just created a bunch of users with their email addresses (on the homeserver, not the IS)
• tried to invite by email and discovered it didn't work

On reflection, there's a good chance they actually had vector.im set up as their IS by default, and the issue was just that they knew email<->username association existed (because they'd just created it in the homeserver) but "wasn't working" (because those email addresses aren't published to the IS).

There is a negation missing in the title. I think it should be:

This only works if you type something, not if you paste the address.

As Identity Servers are optional, we didn't set one up in our organization - we would prefer our users to understand the concept of MXIDs - but this is issue confusing them very much.

Update 2:

I realized that this is even worse in our setup, because we disabled UIFeature.identityServer. In this setup element-web doesn't show any error when you try to invite an e-mail address.

The invite-dialog really needs some love.
