Do for this course's tools what vt-prog-misconceptions (Soori & Bosk, Introductory programming through the lens of variation theory) does for introductory programming: catalogue misconceptions from the literature, analyse them through variation theory to identify the critical aspects learners must discern, and outline patterns of variation to teach against them — for the terminal, SSH, Git, and LaTeX.
Structure to mirror from ../research/vt-prog-misconceptions:
- one content file per topic (cf. its functions-variables.tex, conditionals.tex, …), single source built as both article and slides;
- misconceptions.bib with per-citation provenance blocks;
- a literature-protocol appendix documenting every query and screening decision (cf. its literature-protocol.tex and literature-review/);
- scholar-driven systematic search phase.
Seed material already in this repo (2026-07-18 search round): literature/mental-models.md and literature/mental-models.bib — covers shell difficulty (Doane 1992; Winder et al. 2024), file-system spatial skill (Bergman 2008; Benn 2015; Whitham 2017), Git misconceptions incl. branch-as-directory (Isomöttönen & Cochez 2014; Perez De Rosso & Jackson 2016; Postner et al. 2026 poster), LaTeX (Knauff & Nejasmic 2014 — and a noted gap: no LaTeX misconception studies found), and VT applications (Thuné & Eckerdal 2009, 2018; Svensson et al. 2020).
Known gaps to address in the systematic phase: SSH misconceptions (nothing found yet; only the ssh-cycle observation from IT in #111), LaTeX/markup misconceptions (nothing found), and the file-system cohort-decline claim (journalistic only — our own grading data could substantiate a local version, cf. #50).
