Describe the bug
Black & White (B&W) bit depth documents look much worse in NAPS2 than in other tools. Initially, I thought this was a scanning issue. But then I opened documents I scanned a long time ago as B&W PDF documents (scanned as B&W, not grayscale or colour) and I noticed they also look bad in NAPS2, but look good in other apps like Xreader.
When I use the word "bad", I mean the documents look underexposed: text is noticeably thin, faint, and hard to read.
When I use the word "good", I mean the documents look properly exposed: text looks like the original printed document and is easy to read.
To Reproduce
Let's discuss the best way to move forward, as I imagine you'll have some questions, and I'll be able to provide more useful STR based on your questions.
Expected behavior
All bit depths to look as good as those bit depths allow (obviously, each bit depth has its advantages/disadvantages).
Screenshots
Happily provided on request.
Desktop:
OS: Linux Mint 21.3
Version 7.4.3.0
Additional context
This issue only affects Black & White bit depth in NAPS2. The other bit depths look great!
This issue is more of a challenge to document, define, and pin down than usual because several significant variables changed within a fairly short duration. Changes include:
NAPS2 version updated. So it's possible the issue is a regression.
Hardware changes.
Operating system changes.
Health. I've been dealing with a lot, and so my typical ability to perfectly recall every detail is temporarily reduced.
Given the above, I was tempted to not report this issue, but the more I investigate, the more it becomes apparent that it is most likely an issue with NAPS2 v7.4.3.0.
Please let me know, given the skeletal information above, if you (or anyone else) is able to reproduce. If so, great. If not, let's discuss how I can help.
