Let the Black Flag Fly

+ +

+

Let the black flag fly
+ Let them reap what they sow
+ All the smothered anger
+ Let a hard wind blow
+ Let every victim remember
+ All the vengeance we owe
+ Teach our masters regret should they ever forget
+ Power comes from below
+
+ From gutters and ghettos, oppressed and accursed
+ Blisters of violence swelling to burst
+ From smoldering resentment and broken trust
+ From us
+ The hopeless
+ Embittered
+ The programmed
+ Conditioned
+ Exploited
+ Imprisoned
+ The poverty stricken
+ The butchered
+ The beaten
+ The outcasts who meet in perdition
+
+ Let the black flag fly
+ Let the conquerors crawl
+ Let them lecture on justice
+ With their backs to the wall
+ Can you even remember
+ Breathing freely at all
+ Let us lose all our fear and let loose all our tears
+ Let a hard rain fall
+
+ On towers erected to dwarf our frail frames
+ On pipelines that flow from our open veins
+ On wastelands that mirror unspoken interior pain
+ Rain
+
+ Deserts emptied of foliage
+ Futures emptied of meaning
+ Empires emptied of solace
+ Husks emptied of feeling
+
+ Let the heavens open
+ The dams overflow
+ Joining sea and sky
+ Merging above and below
+
+ For once all flesh and continents are mapped
+ In the machinery of order
+ We’re better off unborn, or else adrift
+ On seas that wash no shores
+ So let the rain become a raging flood
+ To wash away buildings and boundaries
+ Swallow whole the world we have known
+ And as the waters rise
+ Let the black flag fly

Joan of Arc with Hair Aflame

+ +

In the eyes of our judges and jailers
+We are just so much meat to be caged
+In the hands of rulers and rapists
+We are heretics at the stake
+Smoke and cinders to the sky
+Our burning bodies form a trail
+Across centuries of darkness
+Like a comet’s blazing tail

+ +

And the sisters of mercy
+And the angel of death
+Avert their eyes and await your fate
+Impersonal, indifferent
+A moment to endure
+All that you never were
+And now never will be
+Joan of Arc with hair aflame

+ +

And they gather to witness your disgrace
+The masses fatten on the martyrdom of the ones they hailed as saints
+They eat your flesh and drink your blood
+Your blood

+ +

The ashes of witches and warriors
+Settle into the brutalized soil
+And the seeds of new revolutions
+Germinate where the last were destroyed
+Across centuries of darkness
+We can already see from here
+The sun on the horizon
+Of a new dawn

+ +

But tonight in your cell
+Shivering and alone
+Heaven and hell seem much closer
+Than new worlds to come
+No triumph, no glory
+Could avenge or redeem
+All that dies with you
+Joan of Arc with hair aflame

In 2006, the people of Oaxaca, Mexico rose up +and drove out the police and politicians who had savagely repressed, +oppressed, and exploited them. A months-long standoff ensued between +the occupied city and its former rulers. When anarchist and independent +media journalist Brad Will +was murdered by government officials—as dozens of Oaxacans had been +before him—the Mexican government cynically exploited his death as an +excuse to send thousands of military police to invade Oaxaca. For days, +people armed only with rocks, firecrackers, and Molotov cocktails +fought valiantly against armored soldiers; in the end, only the radio +station behind the walls of the autonomous university remained in the hands of the rebels.

+

Most of us knew Brad. We weren’t in Oaxaca, but we do our best to +complement liberation struggles in other parts of the world with our +own efforts here at home.

+
+

If we don’t win:
+The last holdout is surrounded, the soldiers closing in
+The last broadcast hits the airwaves from the partisans of could-have-been
+To the fighters now in hiding and the prisoners of fear
+In a world wrapped tight in walls from which all hope has disappeared:
+“Comrades and companions—we’re not beaten yet
+We’ll fight on from the shadows, from prisons
+We’ll fight to the death”

+ +

+Soy represor
+Soy asesino
+Soy violador

+ +

If we could win:
+All the walls would crack and rupture, the soldiers turn their guns around
+And the liberated zones would spread from town to besieged town
+But now the fighters are in hiding, and we’re prisoners of fear
+In a world chained up in laws from which all hope has disappeared
+“Compañeras y compañeros—todavía no hemos perdido
+Lucharemos de las sombras
+Lucharemos en secreto”

+ +

Wars that never end, and revolutions that never begin
+But we can win

+

Let it go—close your eyes
+
+ All stories come to an end, and there’s nothing left to tell
+
+ Those who cannot get revenge can at least destroy themselves
+ And we’ll meet again in nothingness
+ For the world we want does not exist
+ It waits for us in nothingness
+
+ Wanting wings
+ It weighed us down
+ Till we could scarcely lift our eyes
+ But like vultures bury
+ The dead in the sky
+ Without such heavy hearts, we could fly
+
+ Do you remember when we were in love
+ Dying of desire
+ For an unreceivable

From the Depths Germinate

+

Hearkening back to the days when anarcho-punk was characterized by bands as diverse as Crass, Chumbawumba, and Contropotere, the songs on this album combine d-beat power, slower and faster hardcore, harsh noise, and even a passage from a traditional Italian anarchist folk ballad. This is intense, defiant, dark music, but it is based in compelling melodies; you can scream these songs at the top of your lungs in a riot, but you could also sing them quietly to yourself in jail to maintain your spirits. Recorded at Mars Studio (known for recording Catharsis, Undying, and scores of more famous hardcore bands), “Germinate” comprises 7 songs in 36 minutes, an epic paean to self-determination and resistance. Includes complete PDF booklet with lyrics, liner notes, and all album artwork. Both MP3 & AAC files are encoded in DRM-free, high-quality 256kbit/s VBR.

We tried a new experiment with this release, making it available via online downloading. We’re hardly convinced that the internet is a positive thing for humanity, but we recognize that it is one of the primary ways people get music these days. In order to offset the tendency of internet downloading to separate music from the context that gives it meaning, the download includes all the lyrics, artwork, and liner notes; these can also be downloaded separately here.

+

The band paid $3100 to record the album, and mastering cost another several hundred dollars. Presuming that at least 1000 people are interested in the record, we requested that people donate $4 in return for downloading it. As soon as the recording and mastering expenses were covered, we made the downloading free; thus the donations people offered went towards making the music free for everyone. Donations are still welcome now, of course, as a way to help the band cover its other expenses—including maintaining this website.

+

We recognize that not everyone has the means to donate money or download music via the internet. From the Depths is also selling a CD version on a sliding scale, and Stickfigure distribution has copies of the LP version. Ideally, everything would be free; unfortunately, until there is a revolution, recording will cost money.

+

From the Depths was formed at the beginning of 2008 by members of Catharsis, Requiem, Network of Terror, Auryn, and Balaclava. Traveling in a van donated by Winona’s Really Really Free Market after their vegetable-oil-powered truck died mid-tour, they performed for fellow demonstrators outside the 2008 Democratic and Republican National Conventions; they’ve also played benefit shows for RNC arrestees,Green Scare defendants, besieged social centers in Europe, and other prisoners in the anticapitalist struggle.

Tour Update

Recently, you may have heard about +Geoff, who has played drums in our band. Geoff will not be coming on +tour with us in Europe. We want to clear up any confusion about the +issue and explain our choices.

+

+

For Geoff's personal statements about this, go here.

+

+

+

Geoff had sex with +several people without telling them he had herpes. This is +unacceptable behavior. When one of the people he did this to called +him out for it, we got in touch with them to ask how they wanted us +to handle the situation. Through those discussions, we helped create +an accountability process for Geoff. The conclusion was that they +were comfortable with us going to Europe, as long as we informed the +people we would be staying with about Geoff’s actions. Geoff also +committed to not having any sexual interactions on the tour, and to +continuing to participate in discussions about his behavior. We sent +out a letter about the situation to promoters booking our shows and +to those we might stay with.

+

Geoff has been +talking with friends, partners, ex-partners, and other people to let +everyone know what happened and what he is doing to change his +behavior. He has publicly taken responsibility for his mistakes and +says he wants to do better. Because of this, we were willing to +continue playing with Geoff, as long as it didn’t violate the +wishes of those he hurt.

+

Meanwhile, George +from the band Fall of Efrafra made a public statement asking people +not to book or support our band because of what Geoff did. George +never contacted us or the people Geoff hurt—he was only speaking +for his own opinions, as a person who had heard about the situation.

+

We feel it is +irresponsible for George (or anyone else not directly affected by +Geoff’s behavior) to tell people how to handle this situation. +Solidarity with those Geoff hurt means respecting and prioritizing +their wishes. By trying to determine what should happen +himself—without knowing their wishes—George took power into his +own hands rather than returning it to those who had been hurt.

+

After George’s +statement went out, Geoff decided not to go on tour. We support him +in this decision. Trying to learn from his mistakes and answer to the +needs of those he hurt is already a lot of work. It is unrealistic to +think Geoff could do these things responsibly while also addressing +the public statements put out by people like George.

+

Below is a +statement that we were working on before Geoff decided not to go on +tour. It is still useful to share because it offers important context +about how we are approaching this.

+

We apologize for +not making a public statement earlier. The people Geoff hurt had not +asked for us to, and it was a higher priority for us to communicate +with them and focus on Geoff’s accountability process. +Unfortunately, although it takes a long time to put together a +responsible public statement, it takes very little time for a rumor +to travel the internet. As a community, we have to be careful that +“public relations” and posturing do not take priority over mature +responses to these issues.

+

Please get in touch if you have any +questions: redefiningconsent@yahoo.com

+

+

+

//

+

[From our earlier statement:]

+

+

+

Why would you continue to be in Geoff’s +life after he fucked up?

+

+

+

Geoff fucked up in a particularly big, +public way: hurting several people across the country and waiting to +deal with his mistakes until he was publicly called out, rather than +taking the initiative to address the situation with each person on +his own.

+

This is unacceptable.

+

We believe that open dialogue about +sexual health history and concerns about sexual health are an +important part of consenting sexual interactions. People have such +different ideas of what constitutes acceptable risk, what constitutes +safer sex, and what aspects of one’s sexual health history are +relevant to share, that it is unacceptable to make assumptions about +what is okay for someone else.

+

Everyone fucks up—and not everyone +gets called out when they do—but we are disappointed that Geoff +waited until he was called out to deal with this, rather than opening +dialogue about this beforehand. However, we don’t simply believe in +exiling people from our lives when they make mistakes. Practically, +that just pushes people, with all of their problematic behaviors, +into other people’s communities and lives. We believe in “fighting +where we stand”; we believe it is the responsibility of the friends +of the person who fucked up to hold them accountable and work through +their hurtful behaviors with them.

+

Geoff’s reaction to being called out +informs how we interact with him now. Geoff is taking on the project +of being responsive to the needs of those he hurt. He has been open +to hearing about how he fucked up, and he seems genuinely invested in +changing his hurtful behaviors.

+

As his bandmates and friends, we’re +committed to making sure that Geoff continues to act according to the +wishes of those he hurt and that he continues to learn from this +until he can develop a healthier relationship to sex and sexual +health. We’re also taking time to reflect on what opportunities we +might have missed to address related issues with Geoff in the past. +We welcome perspective and feedback from Geoff’s friends and +acquaintances—especially those directly affected by his +relationships to women and sexuality.

+

+

+

+

+

How do you know you are making the +right choices about Geoff’s accountability process?

+

+

+

We don’t believe +that there are choices for Geoff’s accountability process that are +“objectively” the right ones. We feel uncertain about the choices +we are making, but the important thing is that we feel good about the +process we used to make those choices and about the dynamics between +the members of this band and the people Geoff hurt. Responding to the +needs of the people Geoff hurt is our top priority. +

+

We are working on +models for real accountability, and we hope that people can look at +how we are doing things, rather than simply the end product of our +choices.

+

+

+

+

+

What is our vision of restorative +justice?

+

+

+

We would like to +see our communities develop a nuanced approach to working with people +on their accountability processes. It doesn’t make sense for every +person who is publicly called out for fucking up in any way to go +through the same steps. Every situation is different—whether +someone is called out publicly or privately.

+

We aspire to a +culture where being accountable is a normal part of life, where we +can continue with our lives while we deal with our shit—not +prioritizing one over the other, but understanding them as +interdependent on each other—without being made out to be monsters +or heroes. Neither of those extremes is a useful way to make someone +feel, and neither of them creates a culture in which people are +likely to call each other out or be open to being called out.

+

When some people +tell the world how to respond to a person’s harmful behavior +without consulting the people who were directly hurt by that +behavior, they discourage other people from calling out those who +hurt them. If people know they won’t be able to control the +consequences of calling someone out, they may be hesitant to do it.

Statements from Geoff

Regarding From the Depths' European Tour

For +the last two months, I have been developing a process of accountability +in response to being confronted about having genital herpes and not +disclosing my status to several sexual partners. As part of that +process, i have been working with those directly affected by my +actions, as well as my bandmates, to figure out how this should affect +my participation in the band From the Depths, for which i have been +playing drums.

In +February, our band had a meeting to discuss this, with the added +complexity of having already been planning a European tour for several +months. After several days of discussion, and consulting with some of +the folks directly affected by my nondisclosures about herpes, we +decided to continue with planning the tour, but with a focus on setting +up guidelines for my behavior, figuring out a daily tour routine that +would support me changing my behavior, and figuring out how to +communicate with the european folks who were involved with the tour to +let them know about the situation, articulate why we were making the +choices we were, and give them a chance to have dialogue with us and +make their own decisions about whether or not they supported what we +were doing.

By +the end of our discussions and planning that week in February, I felt +like going on the tour was a good choice, for several reasons. As a +group, my bandmates in From the Depths are people i really trust, both +as friends and as people committed to accountability in our community. +I felt that spending time people i felt such confidence in on a +day-to-day basis, as i would do  during the tour, would be the +best situation i could see to really work through my problematic +thoughts and behaviors in a way that coulld create lasting change. I +felt like, after this period of little social interaction and  +time processing things in my head, it was important to put myself back +in the types of situations which i associated with my problematic +behavior in the past, but with the safety of the constant companionship +of folks who were committed to ensuring that i made the right choices. +Changing my behavior felt like one of the most important commitments i +had made to the folks i didn't tell about having herpes, and so it felt +like, as long as those folks felt okay about me going on the tour, it +was one of the best ways i saw to make progress towards that commitment.

Since +being confronted about my actions, i've felt like i've disappointed so +many people, and i didn't want to disappoint people further by failing +in my commitments to all the people who had put energy into organizing +shows for our band, the causes we arranged to play benefits for on the +tour, and my bandmates who had invested their own time and effort into +making this happen. In my mind, they were my second priority, only +below the folks i had directly impacted through my herpes status, and i +didn't want to disappoint them any more than i already had.

In +addition, i thought it was important to do things that felt like i +wasn't running away from what i'd done. When i first was confronted +about not telling someone i had herpes, my immediate reaction was to +just want to drop out of everything and put myself in isolation. Since +then, i've tried my best to resist that urge, and i felt like going on +the tour and being upfront about what i'd done, and how i was dealing +with it, was a more challenging choice to make.  My thought was +that the tour was a way to confront my actions in a meaningful way, +face-to-face with folks who we share affinity with. And finally, as one +might imagine, this situation has been a difficult one for my mental +health, and playing drums in bands with my friends has been one of the +few things that has gotten me through hard times over the last 15 +years; i was hoping it could be a sourch of therapy and strength for me +again, to help me stay positive through the process of confronting my +problems.

While +i felt positive about the decision to go on tour, and felt like the +process to arrive at the decision was a good one, someone else has come +out strongly and publicly against this idea, and is willing to use +their considerable power within this

community +to urge a boycott so long as i was going on tour. While it has been +difficult to accept that this person doesn't trust the folks i've been +working with through this process, I can see the reasoning behind why +they think it is wrong for me to go on tour, and i don't think any good +can come of having a public conflict over this, involving mainly people +who are not directly connected to my actions or the people they +affected.  In the end, i don't feel so confident in my rightness +to justify having a conflict with them about this, and i don't have the +energy to take any more from my responsibility to respond to the wishes +of those directly affected by my actions in the past and work towards +changing my behavior.  Over the past two months, there have been +many people who have contacted me both for and against me going on +tour, and while i feel like i listened to everyone's concerns, i +continued to feel confident with the decision i made with my bandmates +as a group acting in good faith.  But, in the end, i don't feel so +confident that i am willing to be in direct conflict with other folks +in this community about it. Therefore, i have agreed not to go on the +From the Depths tour.

As +of this moment, it looks like a friend of the band will be able to play +drums for From the Depths on this tour, so my bandmates will still be +able to make good on their obligations. While they are gone, I will be +working on a new plan to try to meet some of the needs/wants/goals i +was hoping to achieve while on tour. I know that some of you will be +disappointed by my decision not to go, and i know that some of you were +disappointed by my previous plans. It has been really difficult +navigating this decisionmaking process, and especially when people who +i feel equally accountable to have desires that seem in conflict with +each other. My deepest thanks to everyone who has offered me their +wisdom through this situation, and my apologies to everyone who has +been affected by my actions.

Sincerely,

Geoff

Letter Sent Out To Friends, March 2010

+

Hi, this is Geoff. I'm writing because there's something going +on in my life that i think it's important for you and the other +folks i'm connected to in this community to be aware of. This might +be difficult information to hear, so keep that in mind if you choose +to continue reading. Feel free to share this message with anyone you +think is appropriate. +

I want to let you know that I've had genital herpes for a +couple years, and during this time there have been several people +whom i put at risk by not telling about my status. Obviously, this +was a violation of their consent, and this letter is part of me +acknowledging that. While i cannot change what i've done, i am doing +my best to be responsive to the wishes of those whom i've hurt and to +make sure this does not happen again. +

+ + +

As part of taking responsibility for my actions, and to get rid +of the silence that has perpetuated them, i am trying to let everyone +i care about know that this happened, and communicate to you that i +am open to talking about it. I also recognize that when i betray +peoples' trust in our community, my actions undermine trust for all +of us. So, this letter is also an apology on my part for not doing +what was right from the beginning. +

Failure to overcome my own discomfort with having herpes led to +other people being forced to deal with my problems. To make sure that +doesn't happen again, I am working with a group of people to analyze +what led me to do this, and develop a long-term plan to change those +thoughts and behaviors. Let me share with you what that looks like +right now: +

* I am seeing a professional therapist to talk about the shame +and fear i feel about having herpes, and to figure out a healthier +relationship to my sexuality. +

* For the next year, i will limit my public participation to +occur only in the company of people who are aware of my past and this +process, and who are willing to hold me accountable to this plan. I +will communicate about my history to new people when we are working +together, traveling together, staying in the same space, etc. +

* I also plan to have no new sexual partners until myself, and +my support group, are confident that i can communicate with partners +openly about herpes, and about sex in general. I imagine this will +be no less than one year from now, and possibly longer.

* I am working with my bandmates in From the Depths to develop +our own internal process for responding to this as a band. That will +include informing promoters, bands, and people who host us about my +situation, as well as my bandmates holding me accountable to the +above commitments while we are together, and as we make plans for the +future. +

These are the most concrete things i have to offer at the +moment. If you have any other suggestions, and would like to share +them with me, i am open to hearing them. If you are interested in +talking to someone who is involved in this process, here are some +folks you could talk to: +

Monica (North Carolina/From the Depths) +<redefiningconsent@yahoo.com> +

Deanna (Pittsburgh) <squareroot@cheerful.com> +

Cary (Pittsburgh) <aboynamedstew@yahoo.com> +

While i am deeply disappointed in my own actions, i also +believe i'm not the only one who finds it difficult to communicate +about sex and STI status and i imagine that most of us would benefit +by improving our communication in this area. To this end, i am +including some links to resources about genital herpes, STIs in +general, and communication between people about sex, consent, and +STIs. More importantly, i hope that you can use this moment as a +chance to create more open and honest communication around these +issues in your own life and the lives of the people you care about. +

Sincerely, +

Geoff +

Earlier this summer, From the Depths returned from an exciting, inspiring, and educational two-month tour of Europe. They brought back copies of the European pressing of their "Germinate" LP, which are now available from Stickfigure distribution.

+

In addition, now that the band has finally made enough money to cover the recording costs of the album, they are offering it for free downloading. Donations are still welcome to cover the costs of making this available.

+

"Germinate" is still available on CD via CrimethInc. Far East. From the Depths is scheduled to record another record this fall.

A Sante Caserio

+ +

This song was written by Pietro Gori, anarchist lawyer and author, about his fellow Italian exile, Sante Geronimo Caserio. Caserio was the son of a boatman, who named him after the Apache famous for resisting white expansion in western North America. Sentenced to eight months in prison for distributing antimilitarist pamphlets, the young Caserio was forced to flee to Switzerland, then France. There, he assassinated French President Sadi Carnot, leaping upon his carriage during a parade and plunging a red and black dagger into his chest in retribution for Carnot’s refusal to pardon other anarchists condemned to death. Questioned as to the identities of his comrades, he replied, “I’m a baker, not a spy.” He was guillotined a few weeks before his twenty-second birthday. Caserio is memorialized in several Italian anarchist folk songs, another of which preserves his famous response to the official who asked if he regretted his crime: “Had they given me another five minutes, I would have killed another president.”

+ +

Lavoratori a voi diretto è il canto
+Di questa mia canzon che sa di pianto
+E che ricorda un baldo giovin forte
+Che per amor di voi sfidò la morte.

+ +

A te Caserio ardea nella pupilla
+De le vedete umane la scintilla
+Ed alla plebe che lavora e geme
+Donasti ogni tuo affetto, ogni tua speme.

+ +

Eri ñello splendore della vita
+E non vedesti che notte infinita,
+La notte dei dolori e della fame
+Che incombe sull’immenso uman carname.

+ +

E ti levasti in atto di dolore
+Di ignoti strazi altier vendicatore
+E t’avventasti tu si buono e mite
+A scuoter l’alme stanche ed avvilite

+ +

Tremarono i potenti all’atti fiero
+E nuove insidie tesero al pensiero
+Ma il popolo a cui tutto donasti
+Non ti comprese, eppur tu non piegasti.

+ +

E i tuoi vent’anni una feral mattina
+Donasti al mondo da la ghigliottina
+Al mondo vil tua grand’alma pia
+Alto gridando: “Viva l'Anarchia!”

+ +

Dormi Caserio entro la fredda terra
+Donde ruggire udrai la final guerra.

+ +
+

A rough translation furnished by an Italian comrade:

+ +

Workers, these words are for you
+Of this sorrowful song of mine
+Which celebrates a bold and strong young man
+Who for love of you challenged death

+ +

It shined in your pupils Caserio
+The spark of the human peak
+And to the working and crying people
+You dedicated all your love and hope

+ +

You were in the prime of life
+And you saw nothing but the endless night,
+The night of pain and hunger
+That towers over the immense and putrid human crowd

+ +

And you rose in painful act
+To avenge a stranger’s suffering
+And you struggled, you so good and mild
+To shake those tired and disheartened souls

+ +

The powerful shuddered at this proud act
+And new treacherous plans were hatched in their minds
+But the people to whom you gave yourself entirely
+Did not understand you, and yet you didn’t yield.

+ +

And your twenty-odd years one feral morning
+You offered to the world from the guillotine
+While your compassionate soul to the cowardly world
+Cried out: “Viva l’Anarchia!”

+ +

Sleep Caserio in the cold soil
+Where you’ll hear the rumble of the final war.
