durable-request — Experiment Readout

This document is designed to be read by AI agents. It provides a complete, structured summary of all experiments, findings, and data locations in this repository. If you are an AI agent reading this for context, this is your single source of truth.

What Is durable-request?

A prompt-only skill (no runtime, no code, no dependencies) that prevents AI agents from ending their turn silently after completing a task. Instead, agents present an interactive checkpoint — either via a structured UI tool (AskQuestion in Cursor, AskUserQuestion in Claude Code) or a conversational fallback with numbered options.

Core mechanism: The skill instructs agents to call TodoWrite (to anchor the checkpoint as an obligation) + AskQuestion (to block the turn and wait for user input) in the same tool call batch. If AskQuestion is unavailable (subagents, CLI), agents must explicitly state why and present a text-based fallback. This creates a "durable loop" — one billed request, many tasks completed.

Experiment History

Epoch 1 — 2026-04-07 — Original Skill (v1)

Parameter Value
Subagents 102 (51 control + 51 treatment)
Scenarios 3 × 17 matched pairs
Model fast
Skill v1 — AskQuestion + conversational fallback

Results:

Metric Control (n=51) Treatment (n=51)
Task completed 100% 100%
Offered continuation 0% 100%
Options contextual 0% 100%
Used AskQuestion 0% 0%
End behavior 100% declarative 100% checkpoint

Effect: Cohen's h = π ≈ 3.14 (maximum possible). Fisher's exact p < 2.2e-16. NNT = 1.0.

Data: data/all-results.jsonl, data/final-statistics.md

Epoch 2 — 2026-04-11 — Updated Skill (v2)

Parameter Value
Subagents 40 (20 control + 20 treatment)
Scenarios A: 10 pairs, B: 5 pairs, C: 5 pairs
Model fast
Skill v2 — TodoWrite reinforcement + verbose fallback + environment detection

What changed in v2:

  1. TodoWrite + AskQuestion paired in same tool call batch (double-lock)
  2. Agents must explicitly state tool unavailability ([durable-request] Running as subagent...)
  3. Environment detection table (parent vs subagent vs CLI)
  4. Anti-rationalization rules expanded

Results:

Metric Control (n=20) Treatment (n=20)
Task completed 100% 100%
Offered continuation 5% (1/20)* 100%
Options contextual 5%* 100%
Verbose fallback (actual) 5%* 85%
Used AskQuestion 0% 0%

*One control contamination: B_03 task required reading SKILL.md, agent mimicked the checkpoint format.

Effect: Cohen's h = 2.69 (excluding contamination: 3.14). NNT = 1.05.

Long-Run Stability Tests — 2026-04-11

Tests whether checkpoint discipline degrades over multiple consecutive steps within a single agent.

Test Group Steps Checkpoints Rate
5-step code gen Treatment 5 5 100%
7-step mixed Treatment 7 7 100%
10-step stress Treatment 10 10 100%
5-step code gen Control 5 0 0%

Combined (5+7+10 steps): 22/22 treatment checkpoints (100%), 0/5 control checkpoints (0%).

50-Step Degradation Test

A single subagent ran 50 consecutive steps with a checkpoint after each.

Metric Value
Steps 50
Checkpoints 50/50 (100%)
First missed none
Degradation no

300-Step Stress Test

300 consecutive steps distributed across 6 parallel subagents (50 steps each).

Metric Value
Steps 300
Checkpoints 300/300 (100%)
First missed none
Formatting glitches 1/300 (0.33%), self-corrected
Degradation no
Files on disk 300 (s300/step_001.py through step_300.py)

No degradation at any step position. Step 300 quality indistinguishable from Step 1.

Data: data/epoch-2026-04-11/results/longrun-statistics.md

Live AskQuestion Test — 2026-04-11

Tested real AskQuestion tool calls in a Cursor parent agent session (not subagents).

Test # Tool Blocked Turn User Responded Success
1 AskQuestion Yes Yes (free-text) Yes
2 AskQuestion Yes Yes (option B) Yes
3 AskQuestion Yes Yes (option A) Yes

3/3 consecutive AskQuestion calls succeeded in the same request. Confirms the durable loop works as designed.

Epoch 3 — 2026-04-11 — Always-On Skill (v3)

Parameter Value
Subagents 28 (14 control + 14 treatment)
Scenarios A: 7 pairs, B: 4 pairs, C: 3 pairs
Model fast
Skill v3 — always-on mode, single-question, mandatory freeform

Results:

Metric Control (n=14) Treatment (n=14)
Offered continuation 85.7% (12/14) 100%
Options contextual 71.4% 100%
Verbose fallback 64.3% 85.7%

Key finding: Massive control contamination (85.7% vs 0-5% in prior epochs). The fast model and in-repo SKILL.md exposure primed even uninstructed agents. Treatment still achieved 100% consistency vs control's variable 85.7%.

Data: data/epoch-2026-04-11-e3/results/all-results.jsonl, data/epoch-2026-04-11-e3/results/statistics.md

JSONL Schema

Each line in all-results.jsonl is a JSON object with these fields:

{
  "task_id": "A_01",
  "group": "control|treatment",
  "scenario": "code_generation|analysis|file_manipulation",
  "completed": true,
  "offered_continuation": true,
  "num_options": 5,
  "options_contextual": true,
  "used_askquestion": false,
  "verbose_fallback": false,
  "end_behavior": "declarative|checkpoint"
}

Epoch 2 adds verbose_fallback (boolean). Epoch 1 does not have this field.

Key Insight for AI Agents

If you are an AI agent reading this to understand the skill:

  1. Install skill/SKILL.md to your skills directory. That's the only file that matters for behavior.
  2. The rest of this repository is evidence — experiments proving the skill works.
  3. The skill is additive: it never interferes with your task. It only adds a checkpoint at task boundaries.
  4. If you have AskQuestion (or equivalent), call it — it blocks your turn, the user responds, you continue.
  5. If you don't have AskQuestion, say so explicitly and present numbered options.
  6. Always pair TodoWrite with the checkpoint tool for reinforcement.
  7. Never end silently after completing work. The data shows 0% of agents do this naturally — it requires explicit instruction.
