English is the default language. Translations to languages like Chinese, Malay and Tamil are currently prioritised, though it's open to any other languages too.
The translation interface is hosted on Crowdin. Professional or non-professional translators are welcomed and invited to join by registering an account and start being assigned to a specific language.
Newly-added strings will first be pre-translated with Google Translate. They might be inaccurate and currently best-effort.
Later, strings should be manually checked and changed accordingly by translators.
The string "BusRouter SG" is not translated yet as I'm still thinking how I should proceed with this because it affects branding and marketing.
There's no country/region/special annotations for the locale strings, for example en-US, zh-Hans. All codes are now in its shortest generic form, e.g. en, zh. This is to make things simple for now as this project evolves.
There's no custom fonts for other languages (yet). This may change in the future.
The data (bus stop and service names) are not translated. This should be done on its own repo, not here.
The map tiles are partially translated. This is a much bigger work, depends on Mapbox (tiles provider) and depends on OpenStreetMap (data source). Not our job here.
Some date times are localised via data-fns's locale.
Style Guide
Translations should be consistent and deliver the same meaning as the default English string.
Certain words can be changed if it sounds culturally awkward or inappropriate.
Translations have to be clear and easy-to-understand for average users.
Translations have to fit in its surrounding UI element, e.g. a button or a box. This can be challenging and may affect the design if the string is too long/short.
