Élément englobant qui désigne une partie subordonnée de premier niveau des unités documentaires en cours de description. Les composants peuvent être, soit non numérotés <a class="el" href="el_c01.html#el_c" title="Composant (Non numéroté)"><c></a>, soit numérotés <a class="el" href="el_c01.html" title="Composant (niveau 1)"><c01></a>, <a class="el" href="el_c01.html#el_c02" title="Composant (niveau 2)"><c02></a>, etc. Les composants numérotés de <a class="el" href="el_c01.html" title="Composant (niveau 1)"><c01></a> à <a class="el" href="el_c01.html#el_c12" title="Composant (niveau 12)"><c12></a> permettent d'emboîter correctement jusqu’à 12 niveaux.

L’attribut LEVEL est utilisé pour identifier le niveau de description correspondant au <a class="el" href="el_c01.html" title="Composant (niveau 1)"><c01></a>, c’est-à- dire : "series" (série organique), "subseries" (sous-série organique), "file" (dossier) ou "item" (article). Il ne faut pas s’attendre à ce que tous les éléments portant le même numéro représentent le même niveau de description. L’élément <a class="el" href="el_c01.html" title="Composant (niveau 1)"><c01></a> peut être ouvert à différents niveaux de description dans des instruments de recherche différents, et le nombre de composants hiérarchiques peut varier, par exemple entre une série et un dossier. Par exemple, un élément <a class="el" href="el_c01.html#el_c03" title="Composant (niveau 3)"><c03></a> pourrait représenter un dossier dans une partie d’un instrument de recherche tandis que dans une autre partie du même instrument, un dossier pourrait être un élément <a class="el" href="el_c01.html#el_c05" title="Composant (niveau 5)"><c05></a> parce qu’il a été nécessaire d’ajouter des niveaux hiérarchiques intermédiaires pour analyser les unités documentaires.
