Zones are only based on objects, so if car isn't detected then zones can't be used |

Right - so I am confused because it seems for a long time people are asking for line crossing and the response is zones. Is there a solution to record motion between zones? |

still talking about different things, you are talking about motion detection, frigate's motion detection is very basic just to figure out where to look for objects, so regardless if object detection is not working for you then that is where you will want to start |

I guess I am looking for motion that's larger than a certain size. The problem as I tried to articulate is that it is a license plate - its not always obvious it's a license plate and its zoomed in, in a way that you can't make out any other defined objects. At a loss how to avoid false positives yet record the vehicles going by. |

What do you mean by "get anything"? I'm assuming you mean you want to record cars, but not moving leaves? Frigate recording can be based on motion or detected objects. |

i have switched to recording motion. Which is fine however I want something that sees motion from one area to the other now the static when nothing is there? Does this make sense? You can see that the picture the car fills a large portion of the screen so it is undeniable - however at night the plate is ALL I see. I get TON of motion in the black of night. See attached history and screen shot.

Here is my opposite camera at night. Ideally it would know that the license plate moves from one area to the next and I can search or see it as an event on the timeline. During the day I have water movement behind it so I added a motion mask. Its not ideal depending where someone drives within the road.

So like other people have asked is there ever going to be a line option? I see multiple requests for quite some time. Im not trying to be argumentative but I would really like to use frigate for all recording and abandon blue virus altogether but not having this capability is hampering. |

I understand but you understand what the problem is at night? Things can't always be made out is the problem but passing and avoiding background motion is important. I love the idea of objects. But if they don't fit within the defined buckets they can't be ignored? |

You're not asking for objects to be ignored, you're asking for complex tracking of motion boxes which is entirely different. |

I want to record on motion triggered across a line - again to avoid the blowing tree branches and other junk. I could be using the wrong terminology but if the situation isn't clear, I can try to expound further. I want to get the "stuff" that goes by, regardless of the objects. |

Zones in Frigate conceptually work the same way as "lines" would, but I don't think even if Frigate implemented a "line" that it would solve what you're looking to do because you're trying to come up with a solution from the concept of motion instead of objects. Motion detection in Frigate is fast and efficient because all it does is indicate areas of the frame that should be passed to the object detector. As @NickM-27 said, complex motion tracking is not something that Frigate does. Motion boxes are not tracked like object boxes.
Based on your screenshots, I'd recommend just recording based on motion. During the day, you'll see motion on your timeline and also tracked objects of type |

You can submit any frame from a recording to Frigate+ through the History view. Navigate to the individual camera from the dashboard, press the History button, find your frame in the recordings, and press pause. The small overlay with the video controls should have a Frigate+ icon you can click to submit the frame. |

Question related to this: if motion is detected can I say to keep X seconds before the detection? In my zoomed in license plate camera it was a little slow to record (or add to the clip). I would like 3 second before? |

Please don't get upset with this question, can I do object detection AND motion recording? Im not clear on how to separate the two. This one camera is really well dialed in now (during the day) where it shows motion. Would be GREAT to be able to search for objects on that camera as well with the available tools? |

Yes you can, motion recording and object detection are separate things though. Based on your screenshots above, during the day motion is being detected and objects are being tracked (you see bounding boxes around the car and license plate). At night, objects are not being tracked (no bounding boxes), but if you have motion recording enabled ( |

My issue with the car was / is daytime. It might be the way the motion zone is drawn in an effort to reduce errant tree branches in the background. |

I also asked about your resolution because it could also possibly be beneficial to zoom out and detect more of the object while still maintaining a high enough resolution for clear details when manually zooming into the image. |

To view the license plate - especially at night - I need to be heavily manually zoomed in to get a legible image. I have changed one to the 10 FPS. |

Describe the problem you are having
I have a very zoomed in camera - that is backed by some trees. The camera record cars going by to read their license plates. I want to record when the zoomed in car (impossible to identify as a car in objects) drives by from left or right. I can create two zones but I want to know when an object goes from Zone 1 to Zone 2 and vice-versa. This will reduce false motion for when the trees blow around.
