It would be neat if beets had some way of managing a subset of the library on a removable device, for example a smartphone or MP3 player.

Cheers

It would indeed be useful to have a way of managing a portable collection.

We have the convert plugin, which is intended for exporting subsets for this purpose. On the other extreme, you can imagine something that is able to actually place files onto a device like an iPod, but this is a driver nightmare and a battle we're unlikely to win (c.f. libgpod still not supporting iPhone 4 or later).

Any ideas about how this would work? What would extended functionality do that convert doesn't do currently?

Maybe the convert plugin will work. I only have devices which show up as mass storage anyhow.

Kinda waiting on #797 first.

Okay, I'll close this issue for now. Please reopen if you think of a good direction not covered by that "exporting" approach.
