Time

If you haven’t learned numbers yet (at least 1~12), please see Counting.

Basics

Dutch English
Het is één uur. It is one o’clock.
Het is twee uur. It is two o’clock.

Half (30 min) intervals

Note 🇬🇧 English speakers: In the UK, “half seven” would refer to half past seven (i.e. 7:30), but in Dutch, “half zeven” means half before seven (i.e. 6:30).

Dutch English
Het is half één. It is half past twelve.
Het is half twee. It is half past one.

This can also be reversed:

Dutch English
Het is twaalf uur dertig. It is twelve thirty o'clock
Het is één uur dertig. It is one thirty o'clock

Quarter (15 min) intervals

Dutch English
Het is kwart voor drie. It is quarter to three.
Het is kwart over/na drie. It is quarter past three.

Combinations

Dutch English
Het is vijf over half zeven. It is 6:35 (lit. five past half six).
Het is tien voor half negen. It is 8:20 (lit. ten to half eight).

Asking for the time

Dutch English

Weet je hoe laat het is? Do you know what time it is?
Weet u hoe laat het is? Do you know what time it is? (formal)
