My name is Ko, and I am a junior designer from Japan. I am looking for open-source projects to which I can contribute my design skills for free. I found Awesome Go and want to offer to redesign the site.
Does the site need a redesign? That's totally up to you and obviously subjective. Here is my take:
The hero section could be improved. The layout feels a little untidy, and it could be made to look more professional overall. I have mocked up a new hero:
The list of links is huge and can be hard to navigate. We could introduce a search component that is an improved version of CTRL + F.
In addition, we can use an alphabetical index where you can jump to each section by pressing the key (a-z).
We could also introduce the concept of tags as an alternative form of navigation. Tags are a bit more flexible than categories. Many projects across multiple categories might be tagged "AI", for example.
You could introduce a concept of "Top picks", which you may want to elevate into their own section. These could be based on reviews from Awesome Go members, or we could also automate this based on GH Stars and maybe GH Star trends. We would show more than just a link and short description for these picks and include some commentary.
We can make it easier for people to submit PRs via the website. For example, each link can have a "Report" button that opens a PR on that line. We can also make it easier for people to submit new entries. We could pull in the "Contributing" and other markdown files on GH and make them a page on the site so everything is under one roof.
I already enjoyed thinking about the redesign and mocking up the hero section. I fully understand if you're not interested or just too busy, but my offer is there if you want it. If you are interested, we can go through any design process that suits you and the time available.
